A Serious Burn Injury Hurts More Than Your Body

A serious burn injury hurts more than your body. It hurts your income, your family . . . your life.

While we can't make your burns disappear, we can help you pick up the pieces so you can move forward. We are Massachusetts burn injury attorneys, Daniel Wood and David Gresham, of Wood & Gresham, P.C., in Wrentham.

Some Causes Of Burns

Burns are divided into different categories based on their severity and causes. Our Franklin burn injury lawyers at Wood & Gresham, P.C., can help victims of:

  • Fire and flame burns
  • Chemical burns
  • Electrical burns
  • Contact burns
  • Scald burns
  • Ultraviolet burns (e.g. tanning beds)

No matter what the cause of the burn, they all can cause severe injury.

How Burns Are Categorized

The severity of burns is determined by their size, location, and degree. The term "degree" refers to the type of damage done. Burn injuries are categorized into three degrees:

  • First degree: Damage is only done to the outermost layer of skin. The injured area may turn red and will probably be very painful. These injuries generally resolve on their own within days.
  • Second degree: The first two layers of skin, the epidermis and dermis, are damaged. Symptoms include intense pain, blisters, and discoloration. Healing may take a few weeks, and may leave mild scars. A second-degree burn covering more than 15 percent of the body is considered severe.
  • Third degree: Damage extends past the skin to the muscle, ligaments, and fatty tissues below. The victim may actually feel no pain, due to nerve damage. Risks associated with these burns include shock, respiratory problems, infections, and disfiguring scars.

Recovery from third degree burns is a slow process, often requiring many skin grafts.
