What are the leading causes of traumatic brain injuries?

Although there are literally hundreds of types of injuries, one of the worst kinds of personal injuries you can suffer is a traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injuries can lead to all kinds of problems and difficulties both in the present and in the future. There are many ways people in Franklin can suffer one of these kinds of injuries but there are some causes that are more common than others.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leading, or most common causes of traumatic brain injuries include:

  • Falls – during the five-year period from 2006 to 2010, falls were the leading cause of people suffering traumatic brain injuries (TBI). During that time, 40 percent of all TBIs were caused by falls. What’s more, the old and young are most affected by this category, with 55 percent of the TBIs amongst children between 0 and 14 years being caused by falls. The percentage is even higher amongst adults 65 and older, with 81 percent of their TBIs being caused by falls.
  • Unintentional blunt trauma – the second leading cause of TBIs is some kind of unintentional trauma to the head, like being hit by an object. These kinds of accidents caused about 15 percent of TBIs over the same five-year time period.
  • Motor vehicle accidents – TBIs are also a common injury in car crashes, with 14 percent of all TBIs reported between 2006 and 2010 coming from car crashes. Meantime, car accidents are the second leading cause of TBI deaths coming in at 26 percent.
  • Assaults – lastly, with 10 percent of all TBI injuries coming via assault, they were the fourth highest cause of TBIs between 2006 and 2010.
