Motor vehicle accidents happen every day all across the country, including in the Franklin area. There are many reasons that people get into accidents, including careless driving or driving under the influence of alcohol. Some accidents happen due to an unfortunate set of circumstances and still many others occur because drivers are distracted.
Distracted driving is very dangerous to everyone on the road. In fact, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, distracted driving is a leading cause in many crashes. Common distractions include texting or talking on the phone while driving, trying to adjust the stereo or paying attention to a GPS device. All of these distractions affect your driving performance.
It is estimated that distractions are the reason for 15 to 25 percent of all types of crashes, whether serious or minor. Statistics also show that texting is more likely to increase the risk of being in accident than simply talking on a phone. Other distractions that lead to car accidents include talking with passengers or paying attention to other things going on outside of the vehicle other than the traffic.
When you let distractions steal your focus while you’re driving, you become a threat to everyone on the road as well as to yourself. Many state law enforcement agencies, including those in Massachusetts are continually working hard to keep distracted drivers off the road by passing tougher laws to punish distracted drivers, like those who text and drive. As more efforts are put in place to cut back on distracted driving, hopefully there will be fewer accidents caused by distracted drivers.
